SLEEPING CAR of the 1929 ORIENT EXPRESS – Super Detailed Kit

Amati Model has outdone themselves with the release of this new kit. It is a 1/32-scale model kit of the Sleeping Car of the famed Orient Express, known for luxurious accomodations and international travel across Europe, connecting locations as far as Calais, Istanbul, and Athens.

The new Amati kit measures over 28″ in length and features multimedia construction, using high quality wood, parts of photo-etched brass and nickel-silver, highly detail metal casting, and more.

The model features a super detailed interior and a removable roof top, so you can access it all.

The kit, which will be in stock very soon, is a very high-end kit and lists for $1199, but we will have a special introductory sale price of $999.

Guillows Wooden Airplane Kits Now Available

No, these aren’t ship models. But, sometimes you want to take a break from your ship model project to build something different. So, we’re now stocking balsa airplane kits from the classic Guillows brand. We’ve got 19 different kits to choose from, from the simple to build, rubber band powered Cadet kit, to the big 1:28-scale Flying Fortress bomber with it’s 45″ wing span!

Most of the kits we carry are designed for free flight or U-Control using small engines or can be built rubber band powered. We also have a couple kits designed for display only, such as the Catalina PBY or the B-24D Liberator bomber.

HMS Terror – New Kit from OcCre of Spain

We just received our first shipment of the newest kit coming out of the Spanish ship model kit maker OcCre, HMS Terror.

HMS Terror was a Royal Navy Arctic exploration ship which, together with HMS Erebus, set out in 1845 under the command of Sir John Franklin to find the Northwest Passage. This ships never returned, and for 168 years, nothing was known about the fate of the expedition. Then in 2016 the wreck of HMS Terror was finally discovered.

The Terror was the subject of a novel of the same name by author Dan Simmons and a currently running television series on AMC, with the first episode having aired in March 2018.

This authentically scaled model from OcCre is based on the work of the talented ship modeler Matthew Betts, who’s scratch built model of HMS Terror can be seen in detail on his blog site http://buildingterror.blogspot.ca.

But, you don’t have to delve into scratch building to make your own model of the Terror, as OcCre’s kit has all the parts and fittings to make a beautifully detailed replica of this famous ship.

OcCre’s HMS Terror is a 1/65-scale plank-on-bulkhead, wooden ship model kit that measures 26.6″ long and 19.8″ high when complete. Every detail has been accounted for, from the large number of shrouds used to support the masts, the protective reinforcement plating on the bow, the unique diagonal deck planking, and more. Yes, I CAN finish a non-Japanese boat model!

Today, I just put the finishing touches on the Swedish Gunboat that I built from an Amati kit. For those interested it’s also called Cannoniera Svedese, and is listed as AM1550. To recap, this is a very inexpensive small model kit that measures about 13.5″ long when complete. It lists for $109 at Ages of Sail, where this one came from. There have been some challenges, but they’ve all been small ones.

The Swedish Gunboat project is the closest I have to completion now, and it’s very nearly done, so I decided to put most of my effort there now. My ideas about using it to practice new sail making techniques or other grand thoughts have been set aside. As I mentioned before, the model is mostly being built straight out of the box, but there are a few minor modifications.

Fantastic Work of Japanese Ship Modelers – THE ROPE, Tokyo

THE ROPE, Toyko, is Japan’s largest ship model society, and they have some extremely talented ship modelers. Every Spring, they have a ship model exhibition, and photos of the exhibited models are posted on the group’s well-organized website.

With their next exhibition coming up in April, it seems a good time to take a look at works from their prior events.

The Rope has an excellent website with an english language section. They even have downloadable copies of their newsletter in english. The site is really worth checking out, but the best part is the gallery of models from past exhibitions.

February Meeting and a Recommended Model Kit

The Flattie is a small kit from the classic ship model manufacturer Corel of Italy. It’s an often overlooked kit, as ship modelers tend to eye square-rigged warships, or other popular subjects. But, one local ship model club has recommended this kit as a decent beginner’s kit, and will be using it as an introductory kit for their new ship modeler members.

They will be building an example kit and posting photos and notes as they go. We’ll be sure to share them here, so stay tuned!

After dealing with some scheduling issues due to looming government shutdowns, the Hyde Street Pier Model Shipwrights managed a nice, normal meeting on February 17, the first meeting of the year. We had 8 members attending, which is pretty good for this group. We agreed that we need to bring in more ship modelers, as only about 3 attending members have been actively ship modeling in recent months.

Still, it was one of the most productive meetings we’ve had in some time. We also managed to replace the dehumidifier tubs in the big square-rigger model’s case. Being on the bay, we need to do this periodically to help keep these display models in good condition.

San Francisco Bay Area – January 2018 Ship Model Meetings

Here is a report of a few local meetings of some very talented ship modelers, most of whom are customers of Ages of Sail.

Meetings are a great way to share information, socialize, and to get and to give others inspiration.

With the Government shutdown over the weekend, and the closing of the National Parks, the Hyde Street Pier Model Shipwrights meeting had to be cancelled. It has now been rescheduled for the following Saturday, January 27th, at the usual 9:30am.

However, this didn’t affect two other groups that met this month. One of these is the South Bay Model Shipwrights, which normally meets on the third Friday of each month at 7pm at the Los Altos Public Library. This is a great and very social group, with several members meeting for a pre-meeting dinner at Chef Chu’s restaurant, just up the street from the library.

This is one of the early ship modeling groups and was started by Jean Eckert in 1982. While the group is much smaller than it was in its heyday, the members still keep it an interesting and active club.
