Amati’s New Spanish Coca – A Closer Look

Amati’s latest release is the Coca or Spanish Carrack, a type of round hulled ship with large cargo capacity that was widely used to transport cargo in the 15th Century. The kit appears to be based on the famous Mataró ship model, a votive believe to have been presented to the Chapel of San Simón in Mataro, Spain. The model is now on display at the Maritime Museum Rotterdam.

The new kit from Amati featured a double-planked hull on a new style of laser-cut MDF frames that includes slotted longitudinal frames to give the hull more rigidity and improved alignment. Together with its simple rig and planking, this appears to live up to Amati’s labeling of it as an “Easy to Build” model. While that may be true, it still appears to make a lovely model. At 1/60-scale, the completed model is just over 16″ long and 16.5″ tall.

In addition, the kit includes a nice 16-page fully color-illustrated instruction book. While the instructions are written in Italian, a separate pamphlet includes all the text in English.

Amati Revenge, 1577 – New Kit Now Listed on Ages of Sail

Finally! The Revenge kits are on their way. This is a long anticipated kit designed by the very talented ship modeler Chris Watton. We’ve been waiting for the release of this kit for nearly a year, and we’ve finally gotten the word they are shipping and we should have them in just over a week.

This kit is part of Amati’s highly regarded Victory Models line. As with all models in the line (except for the HMS Vanguard) the model is 1:64-scale, and features a double-planked plank-on-bulkhead hull and highly detailed parts.

We’ve officially listed the kit on the Ages of Sail website and have opened up pre-orders with special pricing now until quantities last. Regular pricing is $549 for this kit, which we’re listing now for $499. This is a limited time offer, so make sure to take advantage of it while supplies last.

Pre-orders are now being accepted, and the kits will ship as soon as they come in, which should be approximately June 5th.

New Combo Sets Just Added

Though the holidays are past and we’re into a new year new, we’ve decided to keep our Holiday Combo Sets, and we’re keeping the pricing the same and we’ve even added two more!

We now have Combo Set #5 which features the Q-Ship “Hunter” by Amati. This neat schooner rigged ship is an example of the lengths that the Allies went to in order to stop the menacing German U-Boats. Q-Ships would look and operate like an unsuspecting merchant ship to lure the hungry U-Boats in close. They would then spring into action, unveiling hidden armament in an attempt to sink the U-Boat.

This kit features a lot of etched brass parts and hidden armament under removable covers. A very unique model. You can buy the kit separately or as part of this combo set.

Order the Q-Ship “Hunter” Kit

The other set is Combo Set #6, featuring the cutter rigged ship Lady Nelson. This is a really nice kit from Amati that is part of their Victory Models line developed by master modeler Chris Watton. This is a 1/64-scale (3/16″ = 1′) model of a classic, 18th century, armed English cutter-rigged ship.

This 1/64-scale kit is a great for intermediate modelers and a nice challenging kit for beginners. The plank-on-bulkhead kit features high quality woods, laser cut wood parts and metal parts, including photoetched brass parts. Comprehensive plans and instructions and even a display base. The completed model measures about 21″ long and 20″ high. The kit is now available as part of a combo set that includes tools, glues and the classic ship modeling book Ship Modeling from Stem to Stern.
