Like many people these days, Ollie S of Norfolk, UK, discovered wooden ship modeling when the Covid pandemic kept him from his other activities. After building OcCre’s San Juan Felucca kit as his first project, he got hooked on ship modeling and took on OcCre’s kit of the famous exploration ship HMS Beagle. This is, of course, the ship that carried naturalist Charles Darwin on voyages of discovery, leading to his writing of The Origin of Species.
Those of you who have been wanting to buy one of OcCre’s popular HMS Terror or HMS Beagle kits will be glad to know that we just received a big shipment of these kits, which we’re hoping will last us through the holiday season.
Terror, as you may recall, is the British bomb vessel turned Arctic explorer and was part of the ill-fated Franklin expedition, which disappeared in the search for the Northwest Passage.
The ship was also the subject of the first season of AMC’s anthology television series, The Terror, which told a fictional account of the disappearance of the Franklin expedition. This model kit is based on the same information used to create the sets for the TV series, so fans of the show will recognize many of the details, such as the deck lights, the heavy rigging, the companionways, etc. OcCre’s 1/75-scale model measures just over 26-1/2″ long and includes a full set of pre-sewn sails.
But, of course, many people have been waiting for us to restock OcCre’s HMS Beagle kit. This kit is, in our opinion, the ship model kit that most closely recreates the ship that carried famed naturalist Charles Darwin on a voyage of exploration and discovery into the Pacific Ocean.
This 1/60-scale wooden ship model kit is another of our most popular kits, which is why we keep running out of them. This model measures just over 28″ when complete, and the kit that we sell includes a set of sixteen pre-sewn sails.
James H, one of the admins on Model Ship World, has done another wonderful kit review. This time, he takes a look at OcCre’s latest ship model kit, the survey vessel HMS Beagle.
The review takes a close look at each of the components of the kit, so you can see exactly what you’re getting with this new kit. Read the full review at: https://modelshipworld.com/topic/21084-160-hms-beagle-occre/?tab=comments#comment-639803

It’s been a bit of a wait with a lot of hold-ups along the way, but the new HMS Beagle kits have finally arrived!
We’ve been fulfilling the pre-orders, and if you’re one of these buyers, your kit is already on it’s way to you.
For the rest of you who are interesting in this kit, there are plenty in stock! We made sure to order enough that we shouldn’t be running out of them any time soon.
And speaking of running out, the OcCre HMS Terror kits, which we had run out of, are now back in stock too!
[Update: 5/2/19 The Kits are HERE!]
While I’m sorry to say that the new HMS Beagle kits have not yet arrived, they are definitely coming soon. We just found out there was some kind of overload on FedEx’s end with a shortage of warehousing space, which delayed transit. But, they should be back on route to us shortly.
On the positive side, if you haven’t had a chance to pre-order your OcCre HMS Beagle kit with the pre-order discount yet, there is still time. You can get your kit for only $188.10. This kit looks very good and we expect it to be very popular. But, don’t worry, we ordered plenty, so we don’t expect to run out any time soon.
And, if you’re interested in the very popular HMS Terror kit, sadly, we just sold the last of our stock today. Fear not, there are more coming in the OcCre shipment along with the new HMS Beagle kits.
We’ll post an announcement as soon as the shipment is in. So, stay tuned…
They’re on their way!
OcCre just informed us that the HMS Beagle kits have officially been released. We have a large shipment now on its way and they should be here within the next two weeks. To minimize your wait time for this exciting new kit release, we’re now accepting pre-orders.
Pre-Order Now, and we’ll send your order as soon as the kits arrive. What’s more, we’re discounting the kit by 10% off its retail price of $209, making it an even greater value than it already is, at $188.10.
HMS Beagle became famous for her survey voyages when a passenger on her second expedition, a young naturalist named Charles Darwin, wrote his famous work On the Origin of Species.
The ship was built as one of the Cherokee-class of 10-gun brig sloops, and was launched in the Thames River on May 11, 1820, at the Wollwich shipyards. In July of that same year, as part of the celebrations for the coronation of King George IV, it was the first man-of-war to sail under the new London Bridge.
In 1825, her armament was reduced and a mizzen mast was added, changing her to a barque rig, at which time she was fitted out for service as a survey ship.
OcCre’s is a 1/60-scale kit is based on the ship’s 1825 specifications, and features laser-cut parts for the framework, and double plank-on-bulkhead hull construction for ease of build.
High quality wood strips are provided for hull and deck planking, wooden dowels for masts and yards, and a full set of fittings in wood, brass, and cast metal, as well as a sheet of photo-etched brass detail parts. The kit also includes colorful flags, rigging cord, display cradle, and a full set of pre-sewn sails. A pictoral instruction book and plans sheets make for an easy to understand build.
What’s more, if you want a little extra guidance on building this kit, OcCre has prepared a series of 30 short Youtube videos, each between 30 seconds to 2-1/2 minutes long, illustrating the steps of the build.
