The popular Ship Modeler’s Shop Notes (book 1) was first published by the Nautical Research Guild in 1979 and has been out of print for many year, but it is now back in print and copies are In Stock at Ages of Sail!
From the NRG website:
The Nautical Research Guild’s Ship Modeler’s Shop Notes book, first published in 1979 and out of print for several years, is now back in print. This popular and insightful volume discusses the construction of ship models in numerous articles written by marine historians and ship model builders. Edited by Merritt Edson and assisted by Ben Lankford, Edward Mueller and Norman Rubin, the book is a compilation of shop notes and longer articles from out-of-print material contained in Volumes 1 through 25 of the Nautical Research Journal. This book has been a standard for ship model building, and highly acclaimed by professionals and beginners alike. The material has not gone out of date.
The articles are by notables such as Howard I Chapelle, Harold M. Hahn, Michael Costagliola, Ben Lankford, Merritt Edson, Dana McCalip, and many others. There are nearly 170 articles, 9 plans of hull lines and many drawings contained in 216 pages.
The content of this book is different from that of Shop Notes II, which is also available.
But them both now at Ages of Sail.
This October will mark the 4th time Ages of Sail has participated in the annual gathering of the Nautical Research Guild. This year, the conference takes place in San Diego. While it’s still a bit of a jaunt down to sunny Southern California, it kind of bring things back home for us – our first NRG conference was in San Francisco back in… 2011, maybe? Since then, we’ve been at the conference in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2014 and Mystic, Connecticut, in 2015, and now San Diego, California, in 2016.

This year, the event takes place October 6, 7, and 8, at the Doubletree Hotel, San Diego Downtown. We’re planning to bring a full staff this time around, expanding our coverage, and our ability to help out our ship modeling customers quickly. And, in addition to our Ages of Sail table, we’re also setting up a Model Craft Tools table. So, if you’re going to be in the area, consider attending the conference. And, if you’re attending the conference, be sure to stop by our table and say ‘hi’ and meet the staff!

Amazing ship modeler and author David Antscherl caught me taking a photo of him among the ship models on display at the 2014 NRG Conference.
The conference takes place Thursday, October 22nd through Saturday, October 24th at the Mystic Hilton. We’ll make sure to have a selection of some of the latest ship model kits, plus an assortment of fittings and tools for those who like to come home from the conference with a few useful items.
This will be our third year attending the NRG conference and we’re really looking forward to participating again. Hope to see you there!
