Realistic Blocks Now Available at Ages of Sail

The blocks included in ship model kits haven’t changed a whole lot over the ages. That’s because they’re small wooden details that weren’t easy to produce in a fashion that looked much like real blocks used on ships. There are things you can do to make blocks look better, like spinning them in a special tumbler, which can improve the shape. For most of us, that’s probably fine.

In recent years, newer methods have been incorporated in the mass production of wooden blocks for ship models, and we are proud to announce that we’re now carrying high quality pear wood blocks produced by Master Korabel!

How do these blocks compare to the standard kits blocks? You can see this for yourself. Below are some single sheave blocks. Can you tell which ones are Master Korabel and which is not?

We carry all sizes from 2mm to 5mm of single-sheave and double-sheave blocks. They come in 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, and 5mm and are sold in packs of 10.

These blocks are pricer than standard kit blocks, and they’re not available in larger sizes. But, they are ideal for brigs, schooners, ketches, and such, as well as smaller scale models of larger ships. But, mainly, these provide an option to add a higher level of detail and realism to your models than was possible before.

St. Gabriel Model by Alexander Bulimov

Just yesterday, we posted an article, taking a closer look at the Master Korabel kit of the ship St. Gabriel. Well, we found this wonderful build on the NRG’s Model Ship World forum, and got permission from the builder to share some photos here with you. For background on the ship and the explorer Vitus Bering, please see our earlier posting here.

This particular model of Master Korabel’s 1/72-scale kit was built by Mr. Alexander Bulimov, who is an IT engineer, living and working in Dublin, Ireland. He built this model in 2019, and it took him only 4 months to complete. What’s really amazing is that this is only the second wooden ship kit that Alexander has built, the first being a ship’s launch kit from the same manufacturer.

Master Korabel Kits Now at Ages of Sail

We’ve recently added a relatively new line of wooden ship model kits from Russia called Master Korabel. This company produces some amazingly well designed kits that make ship modeling easier than ever, using state of the art design and manufacturing.

Most builders are accustomed to seeing laser-cut bulkheads in their kits, but Master Korabel kits go well beyond that, using some clever engineering to give your model very sturdy construction, while making it easier to build a properly shaped hull. These kits even go so far as to provide laser-cut decks and hull planks, so that you model not only looks beautiful, but with authentically shaped hull planks as well.

Some of their kits come with various options, but for now, we’ve opted to carry just the high-end options. One of their most recent kits, the cutter-rigged tender Avos that we carry is the “Special Edition” version (PSX). In addition to all the features of the basic version, this kit includes pre-sewn sails, the ship’s boat kit, and pearwood for the hull planking and the deck structure trim.

The Tender Avos in particular includes laser-etched details in the hull planking such as the butt of the planks, scarf joints, and all the treenails perfectly marked. The kit is a beauty to behold and your resulting model will amaze you.

The newest kit from Master Korabel is the “Secret Vessel” Morel, a wooden submarine designed by a Russian carpenter who offered to build it for Peter the Great in 1718. You can read more about the vessel here.

Other ship model kits include the Cannon Jolle, a gunboat designed for use in coastal defense, the Schooner Polotsk, the Brig Phoenix, and the Deck Boat St. Gabriel. Pre-sewn sail sets are available for each of these, as well as the Double Boat. The Tender Avos kit version we sell includes the pre-sewn sails.
