Yes, I CAN finish a non-Japanese boat model!

Today, I just put the finishing touches on the Swedish Gunboat that I built from an Amati kit. For those interested it’s also called Cannoniera Svedese, and is listed as AM1550. To recap, this is a very inexpensive small model kit that measures about 13.5″ long when complete. It lists for $109 at Ages of Sail, where this one came from. There have been some challenges, but they’ve all been small ones.

The Swedish Gunboat project is the closest I have to completion now, and it’s very nearly done, so I decided to put most of my effort there now. My ideas about using it to practice new sail making techniques or other grand thoughts have been set aside. As I mentioned before, the model is mostly being built straight out of the box, but there are a few minor modifications.

February Meeting and a Recommended Model Kit

The Flattie is a small kit from the classic ship model manufacturer Corel of Italy. It’s an often overlooked kit, as ship modelers tend to eye square-rigged warships, or other popular subjects. But, one local ship model club has recommended this kit as a decent beginner’s kit, and will be using it as an introductory kit for their new ship modeler members.

They will be building an example kit and posting photos and notes as they go. We’ll be sure to share them here, so stay tuned!

catopower's avatarHyde Street Pier Model Shipwrights

After dealing with some scheduling issues due to looming government shutdowns, the Hyde Street Pier Model Shipwrights managed a nice, normal meeting on February 17, the first meeting of the year. We had 8 members attending, which is pretty good for this group. We agreed that we need to bring in more ship modelers, as only about 3 attending members have been actively ship modeling in recent months.

Still, it was one of the most productive meetings we’ve had in some time. We also managed to replace the dehumidifier tubs in the big square-rigger model’s case. Being on the bay, we need to do this periodically to help keep these display models in good condition.

San Francisco Bay Area – January 2018 Ship Model Meetings

Here is a report of a few local meetings of some very talented ship modelers, most of whom are customers of Ages of Sail.

Meetings are a great way to share information, socialize, and to get and to give others inspiration.

catopower's avatarShip Modeler

With the Government shutdown over the weekend, and the closing of the National Parks, the Hyde Street Pier Model Shipwrights meeting had to be cancelled. It has now been rescheduled for the following Saturday, January 27th, at the usual 9:30am.

However, this didn’t affect two other groups that met this month. One of these is the South Bay Model Shipwrights, which normally meets on the third Friday of each month at 7pm at the Los Altos Public Library. This is a great and very social group, with several members meeting for a pre-meeting dinner at Chef Chu’s restaurant, just up the street from the library.

This is one of the early ship modeling groups and was started by Jean Eckert in 1982. While the group is much smaller than it was in its heyday, the members still keep it an interesting and active club.

New Colin Archer Kit from Billing Boats Available Now

Several years ago, Billing Boats’ popular 1:15-scale kit of the salvage ship Colin Archer was discontinued. The kit was very big, at about 50″ long, and featured an ABS plastic hull and was suitable for RC operation.

New, BB728 Colin Archer wooden hulled, expert level ship model kit.

Billing Boats has just released a new version of the Colin Archer kit at the same 1:15 scale. But, now, the kit features a wooden plank-on-bulkhead construction hull. The size, construction, and detail have earned this kit an EXPERT level rating. So, make sure you’re ready to take on a kit of this difficulty level before starting your build.

Ages of Sail and our sister site Billing Boats USA now have this kit available. It is one of Billing Boats largest, and lists for $789.95. But, if you’ve been following this blog or our Facebook posts, you’ll know that we currently have a Black Friday Sale that will continue up through midnight tonight. So, you can get this kit now from Ages of Sail, and save $79 by phoning in your order. Your order will also qualify for free shipping as part of our Black Friday special.

South Bay Model Shipwrights November Meeting

One of the local ship model clubs had their meeting recently. It was nice to see kits built from some of our customer as they progress and to see others admiring their work. Lou Cierra is one of our regulars who is new to ship modeling, but seems to be taking to it with a passion. The Gulnara is his third ship model kit.

The Krick line from Germany is one of the newer lines of kits that we carry. In addition to the Gulnara, other display models include the U.S. revenue cutter Alert and the Baltic Schooner Karl und Marie. The company also produces a large number of kits designed for RC operation, including steam operation.

If you’re interested, make sure to check them out at http://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/krick-models.html

We also stock Corel’s Baltic ketch Scotland. This is a fairly popular Corel kit due to the interesting subject, the kits small size and lower price point, and Corel’s quality reputation. We have just about the entire Corel line in stock, which ranges from this small ketch to the big Wappen Von Hamburg.

You can find them at http://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/corel-ship-kits.html

I made it to the meeting of the South Bay Model Shipwrights, which is a very long-standing and respected ship model club that was started by Jean Eckert back in 1982 and has operated continuously ever since. Some current and past distinguished members include Jerry Blair, Dr. Clayton Feldman, of course Jean Eckert, Ed Von Der Porten, the late Charles Parsons, and many more.

The club currently meets at the Los Altos Public Library in Los Altos, California, at 6:00 pm, generally on the third Friday of every month. The club, though much smaller than in the past, is  currently headed by Jim Rhetta, who recently completed the rigging of a model of the 3-masted schooner Fannie Gorham for a couple who’s father had passed away after completing most of the hardware.

Jim brought the model, which was in a case built by member and past-president Walt Hlavecek, and presented it…
